Building code in Nunavut

Nunavut has adopted National Building Code of Canada 2015, effective September 1, 2018. The adopting authority is Government of Nunavut — Community and Government Services, Safety Services Division (Office of the Chief Building Official). Verified June 28, 2026.

Nunavut adopts the National Building Code of Canada 2015 (first printing, including revisions/errata before September 1, 2018) under the Building Code Regulations (R-009-2018, Building Code Act), with Nunavut-specific modifications in Schedule 1; adoption is explicitly static (not 'as amended from time to time'). Building HVAC/mechanical is covered within this code, not a standalone mechanical code. Nunavut follows the National Model Codes with a lag — it remains on the 2015 edition while NBC 2020 adoption is not yet in force. The 2024 amendment (R-016-2024) was an administrative name change only and did not bump the edition.

It is the specific edition of a model code (for example CSA C22.1:24 or the 2020 National Building Code) that a province has legally adopted and currently enforces. Codes are republished on roughly three-year cycles, and each jurisdiction adopts a new edition on its own schedule — often with amendments — so the edition in force varies by place and by discipline.

Not always. Many jurisdictions set a baseline edition for the whole province, but local building departments (the authority having jurisdiction, or AHJ) can amend it or enforce a different edition. Some places leave most adoption to local jurisdictions, and a few large cities run their own codes. Always confirm with your AHJ.

CSA standards such as the Canadian Electrical Code and CSA B149.1 usually have to be bought, though some provinces give free read-only access through their own portals.
